Happy New Year! Resources discussed in Episode #5

A new year is a great time to reflect and reset. What was great in 2024 you’d like to see more of in 2025? What wasn’t working you’d like to see change? What brought joy? What sorrow needs to be grieved? How can this year bring even more meaningful connection with God and your family?

Rule of Life

We discuss the topic of a “rule of life” - we all have one. A rule of life is the rhythms and practices we walk out in our daily lives, whether intentional or unintentional. It consists of habits that are serving us well or possibly getting us a bit off track. A new year is just one time we can take to reflect on the health of our “rule of life.”

A tool we mention in the podcast is a part of material from Practicing the Way.org - a non-profit that is providing tools & teachings to help people grow as disciples of Jesus. They have several resources on this topic. Here is a few places to get started.

Sabbath…or Sabb “ish”?

In the podcast we talked quite a bit about how 2025 is the year we hope to grow in our practice of Sabbath. We acknowledged we might need a season of “Sabbish” or something shorter than a full day to start. Especially since having a day set apart in this way is so counter cultural to the way most people live today.

Below are some possible questions that might assist in helping you begin practicing Sabbath. These are from the book, The Intentional Year by Holly & Glen Packiam.

Planning: When will I set aside a time or day for Sabbath? What will I do and what will I cease?

Possible Activities: Light some candles, Take time to worship, Take a walk - get out in nature, Leisurely make a meal you really enjoy, play some games, gather with family or friends

Questions to help you decide which activities are acceptable on the Sabbath: What activities are life giving to you? What helps you connect with the Lord? What brings you rest? What brings you delight?

Activities to cease from on the Sabbath: technology, projects on your to-do list, housework, chores, shopping
